A typical dental visit matters for a variety of reasons, and we will take a look at those today. Essentially, your visit to our office will be broken down into two parts; the first part involves checking your general oral health followed up with a thorough cleaning.

First, you will be checked for cavities and to find out where the plaque/tartar is located on your pearly whites. Plaque is that sticky film you can feel when you run your tongue along your teeth. If this bacterial film isn’t removed, it eventually hardens into tartar, which means it mineralizes and requires professional dental tools to remove. If tartar is left to build up, it can cause oral diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease. Next, your gum health will be evaluated to make sure they are healthy and spaced correctly. Spaces between the teeth and gums will increase with gum disease. Finally, your smile will be checked for unhealthy oral conditions or diseases. We will also go over any treatment information you might need based on the conditions we find.

The second part of your dental visit involves cleaning your teeth and gums. We will use scaling tools to clean the tartar off of your teeth and along the gumline. To remove surface stains on the teeth, they will be polished with a gritty paste after scaling. Once the teeth are clean we will floss carefully to make sure they are free from debris between the teeth and along the gumline. We will also go over any brushing and flossing techniques with you as needed.

In between your six-month dental visits we recommend that you keep your smile bright and healthy by brushing your teeth at least two times a day, for two minutes each time. Don’t forget to floss thoroughly at least once a day. Follow up with a plaque-reducing mouthwash and you will be well on your way to preserving your smile!
