What can you do to avoid a dental emergency? While accidents do happen, there are some precautions you can take to avoid some types of problems. For example, avoid chewing hard candy, popcorn kernels and ice which can crack your teeth, and remember that your teeth are for chewing food, not to be used as scissors to open packaging, etc. no matter how tempting. Also, when participating in sports, wearing a mouthguard can offer added protection. But in the event the following does occur, there are some things you can do before you are seen by our dentists.
-Toothache: If you have a toothache, first, rinse your mouth with warm water. Then, carefully floss any food that might be in the tooth. If the pain doesn’t go away, be sure to come in and see our dentist.
-Knocked out tooth: If you have lost a permanent tooth, the important thing is to keep it moist. Before you can get in to be seen, it is best to place it back in the socket (avoid handling the root), if possible. The next best thing is to put it in between the cheek and gums, or a container of milk, or in a tooth preservation product which has been approved by the ADA on the label.
-Cracked tooth: If you cracked your tooth, be sure to rinse your mouth with warm water and place a cold compress on the face to minimize swelling. Make an appointment with our dentist as soon as possible.
If you have a dental emergency, you will want to contact our office as soon as possible so we can provide prompt care. We can instruct you by phone how to care for your smile until you can be seen. If there has been trauma to the head or neck, it is advisable that you see your doctor or an emergency room physician.
