Since the 1970’s, dental sealants, or pit and fissure sealants, have been helping people avoid cavities on their molars and premolars–those teeth that sit in the back of the mouth that are hard to reach for proper brushing and flossing.

The molars are flat on the top surface, with fissures and grooves that can hold harmful bacteria and sticky plaque in the indentations. Dental sealants keep out this bacteria, along with plaque and food particles that would otherwise hide in these fissures and lead to dental caries.

Dental sealants are easily applied by your dentist in just one easy visit, and the procedure is completely painless. A thin plastic coating is painted onto the chewing surfaces of the molars. After being painted on the tooth enamel, it bonds to the tooth as it hardens. This plastic resin can be clear, white or slightly tinted. Your dentist will check on the sealants during cleaning visits, to make sure it is crack-free, keeping out bacteria. Sealants usually last 5-7 years, but can go to 10 years if properly cared for and intact (and having no cracks and fissures in the sealant). Typically, children and teenagers are good candidates for sealants, but so are adults who are prone to cavities but have healthy molars with no cavities or fillings.
